拝啓、父上様


What have I been caught up with lately? Reminiscing, I guess…its funny how modern technology allows you to reminisce instantly, anytime, anywhere….All you have to do is to key in a few letters, and viola, okay I correct myself, VIOLA!, you’re watching Captain Planet episodes on your smartphone and recalling fondly the good old times when you thought that taking pollution down to zero was kinda.. well.. sexy.

I don’t know how I’d turn out today if I hadn’t immerse myself so intensely in Japanese dramas during the times of my textbook ladened youth. I’ll probably be more well adjusted, albeit with bad skin and not as properly waxed. (Damn it! the Japanese just motivates you to groom yourself to death..)

拝啓、父上様 (Haikei, Chichiue Sama, which loosely translates into, “Yo My Father, My Man! ” Loosely. ) was one of the first few dramas which taught me that not all Japanese dramas are about a guy and a girl under a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

The protagonist is a somewhat reliable idiot who navigates us through the wonderfully charming locale of Kagurazaka(the last place in Tokyo  still steeped in the hearty traditions of the olden times) with his delightfully gentle and silly monologue. It’s an endearing tale of a boy coming of age that unfolds at a jazzy, unexpected tempo, sometimes slow and leisurely like snow drifting in the wind and other times anxiously jittery and overflowing with trepidation. But what I liked most about it is that it doesn’t really have an ending and recognizes that coming-of-age is a continuous experience, it is a fluid and precious process that you can’t really put a full stop to.

And also, it stars Ninomiya Kazunari, whom I think is just….TOO HANDSOME.
